Bastet was the Egyptian goddess of protection, fertility, and the home. She was associated with cats, and was often depicted with the head of a cat and the body of a woman. 

Meaning 

  • Protection: Bastet protected homes from evil spirits and disease, especially those that affected women and children.

  • Fertility: Bastet was associated with fertility and childbirth.

  • Home: Bastet was the goddess of the home and domesticity.

  • Eye of Ra: Bastet was associated with the Eye of Ra, the all-seeing eye. 

  • Distant Goddess: Bastet was associated with the Distant Goddess, a female deity who leaves Ra and returns to bring transformation. 

  • Mother: Bastet was regarded as a good mother and sometimes depicted with many kittens. 

Worship

  • Bastet was worshipped in Lower Egypt, and was also worshipped in Alexandria and Sakkara. 

  • In ancient Egypt, cats were mummified and sent to a special cat cemetery as an offering to Bastet. 

Legacy 

  • Bastet's cult faded, but she still appears in pop culture, including American Gods by Neil Gaiman and Black Panther.
