Metaphysical Properties

The name of the archangel Gabriel means "God is my strength" or "man of God". He is a messenger of God who delivers messages and will to humanity. 

Significance

• Gabriel is one of seven archangels in Judeo-Christian tradition. 

• He is often depicted with a lantern, a mirror, a spear, or a lily. 

• Gabriel is the patron saint of messengers, postal workers, and telecommunication workers. 

• His feast day is celebrated on September 29. 

Biblical appearances

• Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her that she would conceive the Son of God. 

• Gabriel appeared to Daniel in visions and told him about "Messiah the Prince". 

• Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and told him that John the Baptist would be a forerunner before the Lord. 

Other appearances

• Gabriel may have appeared to St. Joseph and to the shepherds. 

• Gabriel may have "strengthened" Jesus in the garden. 

• Gabriel may have taught Moses in the wilderness to write the Book of Genesis.
